What to Do:
Unsurprisingly, one of the most popular things to do in Whitby is head to the beach. The main beach along West Cliff is the perfect place to enjoy games and hunt for fossils, providing the tide is out and the weather is pleasant! During the Summer, there are opportunities to try your hand at surfing and fishing.
If you’re feeling fit, climb the 199 Steps to St. Mary’s Churchyard for a great view over the harbour. There’s a sense of achievement as you see just how high you’ve come. After, head through the graveyard to Whitby Abbey, the town’s most popular attraction. Perched menacingly above the town, it’s easy to see why the abbey was an inspiration for Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’.

If you want to retrace Captain Cook’s footsteps, climb on board the town’s replica of HMS Endeavour for a sailing around the town’s harbour along to Sandsend. Standing at 40% of the ships original size, you can relive the Captain’s life at sea and take in the fantastic views of the coast.
Away from the sea, Pannett Park offers a green oasis where visitors can enjoy family nature walks, a Jurassic garden and plenty of picnic areas. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a picnic away from the seagulls!
Visitors can hop aboard the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and enjoy a day filled with vintage charm. Take the train to Goathland, which served as the original Hogsmeade Station in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, as well as the home of Aidensfield in 90s drama Heartbeat.

Where to Eat:
A trip to Whitby isn’t complete without a visit to Magpie Cafe in the town’s harbour. Although the queue for takeaway food is often extensive, the fish and chips are second to none. As well as renowned fish and chips, the restaurant proudly serves over 100 dishes, including many seafood specialities. Locally-sourced meat and a selection of vegetarian/vegan dishes are also available.
Tucked away in the back streets lies Fortunes, a kipper shop and smokehouse which has been serving kippers since 1872. The delicious aroma coming from the street will no doubt leave you desperate to sample some of the local delicacies, after which you will no doubt come back for more!
Where to Drink:
From traditional inns to trendy cocktail bars, Whitby is a great place to enjoy a night out.
The Moon and SIxpence is a bright, modern hangout overlooking the harbour. An extensive cocktail menu, as well as beers, wine and coffee, makes the spot a great place to relax after a day of exploring the town.
The Black Horse, set in the heart of the town, is a traditional pub and one of the oldest in the town. Its characterful building is sure to be the topic of conversation over a pint or two.
